Volunteer Opportunties

The Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region relies on the support of people like you.  In just a few hours a week you can help to improve the quality of life for individuals and families in your own community living with Alzheimer Disease or a related dementia.  Please review the volunteer opportunities below to determine which opportunity fits your lifestyle.  Thank you for visiting our Volunteer page!

The Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region offers many different ways
for you to volunteer:

Friendly Visitor Program
Happiness and companionship are such important parts of our lives and very important aspects of Alzheimer care. Our Friendly Visitors go to long-term care facilities, nursing homes and residential homes to visit our clients and provide them with much appreciated companionship.

In order to provide the best service possible to our clients, our Friendly Visitor volunteers are required to complete a certificate program designed to help them better understand dementia and their role in care giving.

Our volunteer training certificate program consists of five, three-hour sessions, with the following topics being discussed:
   - Normal Aging
   - Overview of Dementia
   - Legal and Ethical Issues
   - Palliative Care
   - Meaningful Activities
   - Environment and Behaviour
   - Role of a Volunteer

These training sessions take place twice a year. If you’re interested in becoming a Friendly Visitor, please contact Dawn, Coordinator of Friendly Visiting Volunteer, at 905-687-6856,
ext. 544.
