Activity Aprons

The Activity Apron is designed to provide the individual with dementia the opportunity to engage in stimulating activities.

Safety Considerations

The features of the Activity Apron are created from everyday items and materials. It has been designed and sewn by volunteers.  Please ensure that The Apron has been put on properly (i.e. tightness/length of straps).

If the individual with dementia has a tendency to interact with any of the items on their apron in a dangerous manner, please take one or both of the following actions:

  • Please speak with the individual who provided the Activity Apron (i.e. A Counsellor at the Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region - 905-687-3914) to determine if there is an alternative Apron available without the features of concern or if the features of concern can be removed from the Apron

  • Supervise the individual with dementia when they are wearing the Activity Apron

Strategies for Encouraging Interaction with the Activity Apron
Try to see if the individual with dementia will interact with the features of the Activity Apron spontaneously. However, if they do not, the following is a list of strategies to encourage interaction with the Activity Apron:

  • Verbal (using words to direct the individual`s attention to the apron)
  • Gestures (pointing to the features of the apron)
  • Tactile (placing the individual`s hand on the apron features)
  • Demonstrating (showing the individual how to manipulate the apron features)
  • Hand over hand (physically directing their hands during interaction with the apron)

Considerations for Keeping the Apron Clean
Some of the features of the Activity Aprons may not withstand the washing machine, therefore wash by hand if necessary and try to keep the apron as clean as possible by:

  • Removing or covering the apron when the individual with dementia is eating

  • Removing the apron during toileting
